Welcome to Battle 500, a commemoration of five centuries of history which helped shape the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow

2026 marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge. To mark this properly the Linlithgow community and other groups across Scotland are coming together to organise a series of exciting, fun and special events

The battle, on September 4, 1526, was the bloodiest encounter in the power struggle resulting from the death of James IV at Flodden.

Some 10,000 of Lennox’s men were supporting the cause of the Dowager Queen Margaret to secure possession of her son – the young James V. But they became trapped near Linlithgow Bridge after crossing the River Avon.

The opposing force, led by the Earl of Arran, was soon joined by pro-Douglas reinforcements from Edinburgh and the resulting massacre led to at least 2,500 men being slain and Lennox himself being murdered.

This little-known battle is highly significant in terms of the Stuart line of succession and, of course, it happened right here in our historic town. This is why we are raising the profile of the battle and making sure it’s never forgotten.

A whole host of events are planned from a ceremony to mark the quincentenary, including a parade along the High Street to the battlefield site, to school projects, performances in song, drama and spoken word, as well as interactive exhibitions, hands-on historical experiences and walking tours.

We also have a few plans to weave the Battle theme into existing events and some extra-special projects in the pipeline, but the big idea is that anyone and everyone, from anywhere and everywhere are welcome to get involved.
