Battle 500
Tree planting

Battle 500 and Elana Bader of Darroch Nurseries have a plan to create a lasting legacy for the commemoration of the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge.

West Lothian Council identified an area of land at the Xcite Leisure Centre where we can plant trees, outlined on the map. It is to the north of the car park, next to, but separate from, an existing orchard. Trees will be planted here as a memorial to the battle, retaining the area for recreation. We do not envisage the need for fences, with enough space between the trees to walk dogs, have a picnic, run around and play.

The native trees (small saplings, large enough to plant) are being provided by Elana Bader, Founder and Director of Darroch Nurseries. Members of the public are invited to sponsor a tree.

The majority of the trees being planted in our Wee Wood were collected by hand as seed from local Linlithgow trees, with the help of local Linlithgow volunteers, who also helped to grow them over the last couple of years. These trees will provide shade and habitat for our birds and beasties, and become a living memorial dedicated to the Battle that the public can enjoy.

Tree sponsorship costs £20 (or multiples of £20), which covers all costs, including planting and maintenance.

Sponsor your tree here.

Included in your tree sponsorship is the option of adding your name and a message of remembrance or dedication to the Honour Roll, which will be available for everyone to see. So, if you’re sponsoring a tree to remember a loved one, or commemorate a special anniversary or date, you’ll be able to show people your message online.

Every year, around September 4th (the date the battle was fought right here in Linlithgow), there would be an annual maintenance day to prune the trees and remember the events of that momentous day in Scottish history.

The Battle 500 team would like to extend huge thanks to Darroch Nurseries and West Lothian Council for their input into this part of the project – it wouldn’t have been possible without their support. This is an opportunity to create a community space with a lasting, living legacy commemorating an important part of Linlithgow’s history and we hope you’ll join us in being a part of it.
